Chargers News: How TCU’s Recent Season Played a Role Into Player Selections
During the NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers covered many of their needs this past weekend. They needed speedy receivers, and they selected players like that; they needed defenders on every level, and they got that as well, and they even got themselves a young backup quarterback.
The Chargers did well overall with their selections, and they made sure to get them from a university that just experienced greatness this past season. Three of the Chargers' seven picks came from TCU, including two of their first four picks.
With their first pick, they selected WR Quentin Johnston; in the fourth round, they selected WR Derius Davis; with their last pick, they got Heisman runner-up QB Max Duggan.
It's no secret they were fans of the Horned Frogs, as Chargers head coach Brandon Staley made it known that TCU's historic season played a role in their selections.
"They have a really outstanding team. It's the same as the University of Georgia or the University of Alabama, one of the top college programs," Staley said. "You saw how many players were drafted from their football team and it's no surprise why. [TCU Head Coach] Sonny [Dykes] did a great job with that team.
"Obviously, [former TCU Head Coach] Gary Patterson recruited a lot of those players," Staley added. "A lot of pro players on that team, that's why they made it so far. Really excited about all three of these guys."
Johnston, Davis, and Duggan all played a massive role in the success that TCU garnered. They led their team to their first-ever national championship with a 13-2 record and a 9-0 Big 12 conference record.
This was their most successful season in school history, and the three new Charger rookies had much to do with it. They'll look for more success in the NFL and play a role in what they hope is a great season ahead of them with Los Angeles.
