Chargers News: LA's Running Backs Fall Short of Duo Rankings Going into 2023
There are a bunch of great running backs across the National Football League but it's more of a position by committee nowadays. It used to be one workhorse for a team but more teams are starting to understand that having multiple backs can help alleviate injury concerns. It also allows for teams to not spend as much on a position that the league has deemed one of the more interchangeable.
The Chargers have two solid running backs in Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelly but rely more-so on Ekeler than ever. In a recent ranking of running back duos, the Chargers duo fell just short of the top ones in the league.
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report had this to say about the Charger players.
"Ekeler is one of the most unique and dynamic running back talents in the league. Joshua Kelley is fine as the more traditional runner who gives Ekeler a break, but there isn't enough of a rotation to really deem them a dangerous duo. The same logic applies to other backfields with one heavily featured runner like the Titans, Raiders and Giants."
Per Bleacher Report
Ekeler has been fantastic for the Chargers with his ability to play as a typical back and his ability to catch passes as well. Over the last two seasons, he has posted 1,826 yards with 25 touchdowns and 177 receptions. His production has been towards the top of the league and has provided LA a much needed weapon to their offense.
As for Kelly, he put up 287 on just 69 carries last season and added in two touchdowns. However, the team may plan to use him more than season under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore is known for wanting to spread the ball between backs to limit injury concerns and Kelly could benefit from this. It would help take the load off Ekeler, especially during the grueling regular season.
The Chargers have a strong backfield duo and even if they aren't ranked towards the top of the NFL, they will be good because of them. LA is looking to compete once again in the AFC and will need their guys to have great seasons again.
