'Very Physical' CB Joey Porter Jr. Visits Commanders; No. 16 Pick?
The Washington Commanders selected a Penn State Nittany Lion with the No. 16 pick in last year's draft ... and they could do it again in a few weeks.
According to The Athletic's Ben Standig, Porter Jr. visited the Commanders earlier this week.
Porter's length and athleticism are what made him one of the draft's top cornerback prospects, to begin with.
"He's very physical and has impressive change of direction," an unnamed coach said to The Athletic. "Someone tried to run a pivot (route) on him on fourth-and-2. His ability to flip his hips for a guy that long was a sight to see."
And through the months of testing, interviewing, and constant re-evaluation, his stock hasn't shot through the roof but it certainly hasn't tanked either.
But it's his physicality, and how he uses his length as a weapon, that really makes him stand out.
If there's any concern about Porter entering the NFL level for a team like Washington it's how the cornerback will fare when asked to take an off-man approach or play in zone coverage.
Typically these issues arise from the mental side of things as processing and anticipation come into play more than when in close quarters and press-man situations.
Something that was noted by another anonymous commenter.
"He sometimes gets himself out of position," another unnamed coach said to The Athletic. "Getting caught inside when he should be outside, or he'll misfit something on a run play."
Coaching is key, and while Porter has all the physical traits of a shutdown cornerback entering the NFL, he's lacking in some key processing skills that the Commanders' staff will have to instill in him to fully maximize his potential.
If Washington believes it has the teachers in the building to do it, then Porter is an easy player to see the team falling in love with as we get closer to the NFL Draft.
