Commanders Sale: Josh Harris Will 'Have 15 Models' to Make Washington a Winner

With the sale of the Washington Commanders expected to go smoothly on Thursday all eyes will turn to Josh Harris as the leader of a new effort to restore the team to glory.
In this story:

Football fans don't always agree on things involving their favorite teams, but those who cheer on the Washington Commanders are all in sync with wanting a new owner that has a passion for the team and the ability to restore the franchise to its former glory.

Josh Harris as the majority owner of the Commanders starting as early as Friday fits the bill, and the best part is he's a lifelong fan of football in Washington.

He's also bringing something many new owners don't, and that's previous top-level sports ownership.

Because of that, and a sharp strategic approach, one source told The Athletic, "He'll have 15 models by Tuesday that are like the perfect way to build a team, leveraging the hard cap, and where you put your money and how you build an organization."

"He'll have a plan quickly," the unnamed businessman continued. "He's no joke. His people are wicked smart."

Harris is expected to lean on his years of sports ownership experience and from lessons learned during tenures controlling the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and NHL's New Jersey Devils.

At both stops, The Athletic points out, he showed a level of patience not always displayed by major sports owners. Allowing the brain trusts he put in place to work through their process and get to the point where it should bear fruit.

When it didn't, he moved on, but both teams were set up for success, as evidenced by the 76ers' six playoff appearances in 10 years and the Devils being in what many consider to be a championship window that could last through 2027.

So even as some people call Philadelphia's 'The Process' a failure for not producing a championship, many observers consider it to be a success due to the competitive level the team is playing at in recent years.

Call it a, 'You have to win at all before you can win it all,' approach.

Of course, 'The Process' as it were and the losing on purpose to stay cash-healthy and draft pick-heavy would never work in the NFL.

Especially not when you're taking over a franchise like the Commanders which has been through so much losing, and put its fans through so much embarrassment over the past decade-plus.

Fans like Harris himself, who understands personally the struggle of wanting to see the burgundy and gold thrive again, only to be let down by the result.

He'll have 15 paths drawn out by Tuesday, less than a week after taking over the Washington franchise he grew up cheering for.

And if he picks the right one to travel, Commanders fans will love him more than they hate Dan Snyder.
