Commanders Signing RB Kareem Hunt 'Isn't A Bad Idea'

While the Washington Commanders have a solid duo of running backs in Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson, it's possible the team may add veteran Kareem Hunt to the mix.

There are three things every team needs when they're in a situation like the Washington Commanders are this season with young quarterback Sam Howell getting ready to lead the team.

To help Howell successfully steer the Commanders through the schedule a strong defense, solid corps of receivers, and contributing running back room are needed.

Looking at Washington's current roster, we can confidently say the team has put together all three of those things, but there is always room for improvement.

And that's where the idea that the Commanders could - or even should - add free agent running back Kareem Hunt to the roster comes in.

"Washington has already shown preliminary interest in the ex-Chiefs and Browns standout," writes CBS Sports. "And it makes sense: Brian Robinson Jr. is the expected bell cow, and Antonio Gibson is due for multipurpose snaps under new coordinator Eric Bieniemy. But Gibson insurance isn't a bad idea, and Hunt worked with Bieniemy in Kansas City."

Hunt was at one time the premier back in the NFL before an off-field incident resulted in a suspension and his being cast out of Kansas City.

Since joining the Browns, Hunt has played 76 of the 85 games he's been eligible to play in after serving an eight-game suspension in 2019.

In that time he's carved out a successful role as a complementary back to Cleveland's Nick Chubb who himself has risen through the ranks as one of the best in the league.

Meanwhile, through three seasons Gibson has missed just five games for the Commanders but has battled through injuries time and time again to keep that number down.

Still, the injuries have limited his abilities to contribute at times, and having a player like Hunt on board would help Washington spread the workload to try and keep each guy healthy, but also provide a stable option if Gibson were to go down for a period of time.

While Hunt only spent two seasons with the Chiefs and new Commanders assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy they were the two best seasons of his career.

A reunion in Washington could be the best thing for all involved, and with a projected contract of one year for $2 million, it's certainly something the team could afford to do.
