Which Commanders Position Group is Most Crucial?
The Washington Commanders' offseason has been dominated by conversations about quarterbacks Sam Howell, Jacoby Brissett and which signal-caller will dominate stats for the organization.
But maybe in all the commotion, we're missing the true stars of the show, the tight ends Howell and Brissett will be throwing to.
According to Commanders.com, the tight end room will be integral for Washington's success. Not far removed from a 2019 season that saw three tight ends combine for 467 yards on 44 receptions, this is entirely a new-look unit.
"Three seasons later, one could argue that the tight end group is one of the most solid on the roster," Commanders.com writes. "They will be asked to do more this season, and there will be several opportunities for them to do so."
The Commanders are currently led at the position by Logan Thomas, but John Bates, Cole Turner and Curtis Hodges can all compete for snaps in the team's offense.
With the addition of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, the orchestrator of an offense that featured Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the offensive scheme in 2023 will surely open up to the tight ends.
"Obviously in this offense, it's always been a tight end friendly offense," Eric Bieniemy said via Commanders.com. "Those guys, they show up, they're making plays and the quarterbacks have been doing a great job of locating them in the passing game.
If Thomas can stay healthy, Bieniemy already has a veteran tight end to work with. But even if injuries plague his season once again, the Commanders are going to call upon young tight end talent to lead the offense this fall.
