Commanders’ Magic Johnson: 'Everything’s On The Table' After Sale
Washington Commanders have largely wanted three things to happen with their favorite team.
They wanted a new owner for the Commanders franchise, a winning football team, and a different name.
Well, if new minority owner Magic Johnson - who is part of the groups that represents fans getting one of those wishes - has anything to say about it then the new name is not a disregarded topic at this point.
“I think everything’s on the table, especially after this year,” Johnson said on the Today Show when asked about a potential rebranding. “We’ll see where we are with the name, but I can’t say that right now…We’re going to spend this year understanding what we have in place, and then I’m sure that’ll come up. The Commanders, the name of the team, will come up eventually. But right now, we got enough work to do that will keep us busy.”
Many are taking this to be a statement by Johnson that the new ownership group will in fact discuss a rebrand after the season with the spirit of reporting being that a new name and likeness are more than just possible.
Media literacy would teach us, however, that this is really a very well crafted answer that neither confirms nor denies the possibility of rebranding Washington’s NFL team yet again.
For those in the camp that wants to see the Commanders banished forever to become a ‘remember when’ moment in football history these comments serve as a beacon of hope.
And for those fans who just want to see the new owners usher in a return to burgundy and gold glory, this is nothing more than offseason banter to distract from the boredom that often times sets in before training camp.
Thankfully for both sides real football is about to get started again as Washington rookies report Friday, veterans shortly after, and we get our first glimpse of training camp practice on Wednesday.
Then, like Johnson said, we can revisit this after the year is over.
