Commanders Coach Says CB Emmanuel Forbes 'Really F---ing Good'
The Washington Commanders made it clear that creating more takeaways is a priority when they selected Mississippi State cornerback Emmanuel Forbes in the first round of the NFL Draft.
In his collegiate career, the Commanders' rookie set an NCAA Football record with six career interceptions returned for scores.
"It came from high school being a receiver, so I had a knack for the ball," Forbes says of his ability to create takeaways. "And it just translated over to the DB position if I feel like I can get my hands on him and try to go pick it. So that just helped me out a lot."
While we've yet to see Forbes in competitive NFL action yet, we did get a glimpse at the first-rounder in the team's recent rookie minicamp where he took the field and lined up as the defense's slot cornerback for much of the afternoon.
It was something not seen often on his college tape, but it didn't take long for Forbes to make a play from that spot, picking off a pass during a team drills portion of the practice.
Forbes broke on the pass before the receiver even had a chance to make a play on the ball, and demonstrated the kind of instincts, football IQ, and playmaking ability that drew a comparison to Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
"And I sussed that comparison out after the coach’s initial reaction to the rookie’s weekend was simply, “Forbes is really f---ing good,” Breer wrote.
Diggs had three interceptions in his own rookie campaign before turning in 11 in his second season and has been named to the NFL's Pro Bowl twice in his first three years in the NFL.
Pretty strong comparison by the unnamed Commanders coach, and a solid player to aspire to produce like if you're Forbes.
