Commanders Rookie Emmanuel Forbes Back After Injury
Washington Commanders rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes is off to a strong start in training camp, but he hit a speed bump in Friday's practice.
Forbes, the No. 16 overall pick in this year's draft, came off the field and got treatment at one point. He had an ice pack on his left quad for a bit, but didn't by the end of practice.
The Commanders rookie was back on the field Sunday, giving the team a sigh of relief.
Forbes only participated in individual drills, sitting out of the team exercises.
This is good news for the Commanders, because Washington is ready to throw him right in the fire. He's expected to start as a rookie and become a big playmaker for a secondary that desperately needs one.
Forbes' instinctual coverage is one reason why NFL.com ranked him as the No. 5 candidate for 2023 defensive rookie of the year.
"Forbes is very thin, which could hurt him in run support, but his rare blend of top-end speed, instincts and ball skills give him the opportunity to make his mark early on," NFL.com writes. "When healthy, the Commanders’ front can be menacing as a rush unit, which should only amplify Forbes’ playmaking talents."
At Mississippi State, Forbes totaled 14 interceptions, including an FBS-record six returned for touchdowns.
The Commanders hope that his ability to make big plays translates well to the NFL and he finds the end zone once, twice, or a couple more times in Washington this season.
