Cowboys Ex Kellen Moore Responds to Coach Mike McCarthy: ‘Merging Worlds’
FRISCO - When Mike McCarthy took over as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, the job came with a built-in offensive coordinator.
Kellen Moore was a favorite of Jerry Jones and rumors were that whoever was handed the keys to the head coach's office would have to accept Moore as the leader of his offense.
Moore and McCarthy worked together for three seasons to varying levels of success. At least on paper and statistically, the Cowboys boasted one of the best offenses in the league during that time. Unfortunately, that success did not translate to the postseason.
And now we see there were differences in offensive philosophy.
Moore parted ways with the Cowboys after their playoff loss to the 49ers, and McCarthy said this week that Moore “wants to light the scoreboard up, but I want him to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense.”
Moore put a more positive spin on coming together with a coach who had a different view of doing things.
“It was really fun just to go through the process of merging worlds. I think that was such a fun process,” Moore said, via ESPN.com. “There’s just so many little things as you go through game plans and gamedays as you’re calling the game, just being able to have those conversations about different ways you can go, different paths you can take, he was really a great sounding board for me.”
Moore is now the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, while McCarthy will take over play-calling duties in Dallas. Brian Schottenheimer was promoted to the title of Cowboys offensive coordinator, but make no mistake, this will be McCarthy's offense.
We'll now see which coach has more success without the other.
