Cowboys' 'America's Team' Nickname: 'Not Sure It Means Anything!' - Lions QB Jared Goff
The Dallas Cowboys have had the nickname of "America's Team" for almost half a century, and even though recent times haven't been very fruitful, they've worn that moniker loud and proud the entire time.
There's a certain aura that comes with playing against "America's Team," but some players react differently to it than others. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff personally isn't phased by said aura, as he revealed ahead of Saturday's pivotal matchup.
“Well, that’s certainly their nickname, right? I don’t know if that means anything. They’re a good team," Goff said, per All Lions. "Yeah, I don’t know. I didn’t play them in the ‘90s when they got that nickname. ...''
Actually, it came to be in the 1970s, thanks to NFL Films. But we get Goff's point; it's immaterial to him. He'd rather talk about the Cowboys he's about to face ...
"They’re a great team and have been a great team for a long time, and have a lot of really good players and are really well-coached,'' Goff said. "Yeah, they’ll be a tough challenge for us.”
Saturday's game in Dallas figures to be a good test for both teams. After losing two straight, the Cowboys return home, where they have not lost in almost two seasons, as they look to rebound against another playoff team. Meanwhile, the Lions, fresh off clinching their first division title in 30 years, will look to further prove their legitimacy by upsetting Dallas at home.
'Dangerous!' Micah Parsons Scouting Report from QB Jared Goff
Such a big matchup deserves the attention, and the NFL is giving it just that by making it the lone game on Saturday, and a primetime game at that. Needless to say, Goff, who is 2-2 against the Cowboys in his career, is excited for the opportunity.
"Yeah, these are the fun ones, man," Goff said. "Late in the year, another good team, at their place, can’t draw it up much better. It’ll be fun. It’ll be a good atmosphere. They’ll be ready to go, we’ll be ready to go. It’ll be a good game.”
A good game. Featuring a good name. "America's Team'' ... whether non-Cowboys fans like it or not.
