Cowboys Reveal 'Slow' Trevon Diggs Injury Plan

Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs is battling his way back from a toe injury that held him out last week.

One of the many questions swirling around the Dallas Cowboys' franchise right now: When can we expect to see cornerback Trevon Diggs get back on the field?

Head coach Mike McCarthy met with reporters Monday and was asked about Diggs' toe injury that held him out of training camp late last week. While Diggs wasn't a full participant in practice Monday, McCarthy said he's making a step in the right direction.

"I think No. 1 Trevon's scheduled to do individual today," McCarthy said. "We can just slowly work him back in is the plan."

The Cowboys suited up for their first in-pads practice Monday and while the intensity ramped up for most of the Dallas squad, Diggs was off to the side running through drills with defensive backs coach Al Harris.

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, is a video worth 1 million? If so, then 1 million words can be said about how Diggs is moving, but we'll save you the time.

A toe injury is never an easy one to come back from due to the force an athlete — let alone a cornerback who backpedals and quickly changes direction — puts on it.

Diggs, based on how quickly he sped through that ladder drill, looked like he's nearing a return to 100 percent.

A 2020 second-round pick, Diggs is coming off his second straight Pro Bowl selection, last year intercepting three passes and breaking up 11 more after a 2021 campaign during which his 11 picks led the NFL. As a result, he got paid last week, agreeing to a five-year, $97 million extension with the Cowboys Wednesday.

The Cowboys will host the Jacksonville Jaguars in their first preseason game Aug. 12, and, while Diggs could suit up, it wouldn't be surprising if Dallas holds him out. It is only preseason, after all ... and that "100 percent'' is better spent later.
