Cowboys Cut Malik Davis; Can Little Deuce Vaughn Beat Giants?

Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn has had an impressive preseason. As Malik Davis gets cut … Is the sixth-round pick one of the top stories of the Cowboys' 53-man roster?

Post-draft, one of the most interesting storylines to watch is how Dallas Cowboys' sixth-round pick, Deuce Vaughn would fare.

While some screamed "nepotism'' as his father, Chris, is a scout for Dallas, Deuce quickly showed his talents during OTAs, minicamp, and then training camp, as the more we saw of Deuce, the more he looked like a steal. But fans wanted to see it in a game.

Deuce flashed in Dallas' two preseason games and, as such, catapulted himself from practice squad potential to being the No. 2A/2B running back behind Tony Pollard.

On Tuesday, Dallas cut Malik Davis, further solidifying Deuce’s spot. And now it's time for next-level stuff …

After Vaughn's incredible rise this offseason, could we see him with a Week 1 workload against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football?

Vaughn's size (5-foot-5) will always be a talking point. But he's more than a "gadget guy,'' as QB Dak Prescott has pointed out. He's elusive. He can catch the ball well out of the backfield. He's survived as a pass-blocker. He can return kicks.

Can he help beat the Giants?

Dak and Deuce

Entering the slate of preseason games, Vaughn was in a battle with Rico Dowdle and Davis to backup Pollard and, in his limited snaps, catapulted himself into calculations.

There are other "stories of the summer.'' Jalen Tolbert, Eric Scott Jr., Juanyeh Thomas, DeMarvion Overshown, and John Stephens Jr. (the latter two now injured rookies who are out for the year) are also worthy of a mention. And now QB Trey Lance, acquired via trade from the Niners, is a "story'' as well.

Vaughn in the preseason rushed for a combined 64 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries in those two games, and looked quick and electric in going about his business ... and then he sat out the third and final game, a sign of his perceived value.

But come Week 1, that all counts for little as the Cowboys will be hoping that the "story of summer" quickly becomes the "a helper in the fall" as Vaughn looks to establish himself as a contributor in coach Mike McCarthy's "Texas Coast Offense."
