Cowboys Deuce Vaughn Works with 1st Team: 'Immediate' Role for Little Rookie?
When the Dallas Cowboys selected running back Deuce Vaughn during the fifth round of the 2032 NFL Draft they created one of the most heartwarming moments in the history of the event.
Vaughn's father, the Cowboys' assistant director of scouting, got the chance to call his son and tell him that he was heading to Dallas. Fast-forward to training camp, and the 5-foot-5, 176-pound rookie is proving that size does not matter as he competes for carries with Malik Davis, Rico Dowdle, and the soon-to-be-suspended Ronald Jones.
The Cowboys are searching for a new backup to running back Tony Pollard after Jones was suspended for two games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances and Vaughn appears ready to take advantage of the opportunity.
“I think he’s going to be a very talented player who can help us immediately,” QB Prescott said recently.
Vaughn has showcased an impressive set of moves throughout camp, including this lethal spin move which left his defender in the dust.
The rookie also took reps with the first-team offense on Wednesday. Vaughn picked up a huge gain by bouncing off defenders and using his size to weave between tackles.
Vaughn's elusiveness and vision have been on full display as well as his reliable hands as a pass catcher out of the backfield.
In three seasons with the Kansas State Wildcats, Vaughn recorded 651 carries for 3,604 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground. He also hauled in 116 receptions for 1,280 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in that span.
The Cowboys might have a late-round gem on their hands should Vaughn continue to impress during the NFL preseason, and if his development stays on the right track, he could have a role in Dallas' offense for the foreseeable future. ... and maybe even "immediately,'' as Prescott said.
