NFL Best CBs? Top 2 Are Cowboys: Dez ‘Unbiased’ Ranking
Dez Bryant is still seeing stars, especially when paying respect to the greatest of the modern NFL.
The former Dallas Cowboys receiver, well-aware away of his perceived preference for “America's Team,” listed a pair of Pokes as the top two cornerbacks in the modern NFL when prompted by Lawrence Jackson Jr. of NBC Sports. Trevon Diggs tops Bryant's list and is closely followed by Stephon Gilmore in the runner-up spot, though No. 88 claims they're "1A and 1A."
Bryant tells Jackson he "(doesn't) really mean to be biased" and fully gleans the suspiciousness of listing two Cowboys at the top, but insists that "styles" allow Diggs and Gilmore their sweep ... and shows that Dallas continues to leave an impression on the X-flashing receiver, who spent eight eventful seasons in North Texas (2010-17).
Rounding out Bryant's list is Patrick Surtain II (Denver), Sauce Gardner (NY Jets), and Jalen Ramsey (Miami). Dallas will face Garden's Jets next month and Ramsey's Dolphins on Christmas Eve.
Perhaps surprisingly, Bryant never got to do battle with the tenured veteran Gilmore, who is set to embark on his 12th NFL season and first in Dallas. Each was inactive when their paths crossed in 2015 when Bryant's Cowboys faced off against Gilmore's Buffalo Bills and that case repeated itself five years later when each player was respectively repping the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots.
Count Bryant among the many who believe that Gilmore will bring the Dallas defense to another level of air defense: he's set to join fellow "1A" Diggs and the 14 interceptions he has amassed in the last two years, the most in the NFL in that span.
Though Diggs and Gilmore's playing time has yet to be determined, the Cowboys return to preseason action on Saturday against the Seattle Seahawks (9 p.m. CT, KTVT/NFL Network).
