Cowboys Sign Jarvis Landry on 'Team-Friendly Deal'? Media Prediction
After trading for Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans this offseason, the Dallas Cowboys added to a receiver group that already featured the young duo of CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup.
However, while those three provide a solid trio for quarterback Dak Prescott, Heavy.com believes the Cowboys should bring in another veteran via free agency - Jarvis Landry.
"Given that Landry’s production has declined in three straight seasons, Dallas could potentially land the veteran on an even more team-friendly deal for 2023," Heavy.com writes. "Even if Landry is heading toward the back nine of his career, the playmaker has a decorated resume to lean on and could help the current group of young Cowboys receivers."
Landry only appeared in nine games for the New Orleans Saints last season, three of which were starts. In those nine games he recorded 25 receptions for 272 yards and a touchdown.
While those numbers don't jump off the page, they are solid stats for a receiver who was in the ninth season of his career. Now entering Year 10, Landry can still provide a reliable role wherever he ends up signing.
Which is exactly where the Cowboys could come in. They wouldn't need Landry to come in and be the version of himself that posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Miami Dolphins in 2015 and 2016.
Rather, him being the fourth or fifth option behind Prescott's other weapons could be the perfect role for the veteran. Beyond that, though, he would provide another mentor to Dallas' young receivers.
His last deal with the Saints was only a one-year, $3 million deal, which could lead him to sign a similar deal with the Cowboys should they show interest. That, however, is far from a guarantee, and here's why ...
The Cowboys believe Jalen Tolbert is taking a step up in his second year to secure the fourth receiver spot behind Lamb, Cooks and Gallup. They also believe Simi Fehoko is in that mix, along with a host of others. In short, Dallas will allow work at training camp to prove them wrong before they make another move. So this is a media hypothetical ... but not something presently on the Cowboys' plate.
