Cowboys vs. Jaguars: 5 GAMEDAY Storylines to Watch
The training camp grind finally gets a reprieve as the Dallas Cowboys get their first taste of "proper" football. And what are some of the things to keep an eye on at AT&T Stadium as the Cowboys face the Jacksonville Jaguars with a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday? Here are five.
Running back battle: This has dominated OTAs, minicamp, and training camp as the position of who backs up Tony Pollard this season is still up for grabs.
Rico Dowdle, Malik Davis, and Deuce Vaughn are all vying for snaps, and all will get their turn in the sun against the Jaguars.
Of course, their efforts stats-wise might be tough to evaluate as the offensive line will be a makeshift one, but nonetheless, the game presents an opportunity for those wanting to back up Pollard. Who takes it?
WR4 competition: Again, this is one that has been front of mind the entire offseason, as there have been plenty of flashes from Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, and KaVontae Turpin during training camp, while Simi Fehoko hasn't seen his physical talents translate onto the practice field.
As CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, and Michael Gallup make up the "Big 3," just who will step up and take that WR4 role is unknown.
Impressing during training camp is one thing, but doing it, albeit in a preseason game, is a different proposition.
The Clark/Overshown/Cox battle: Perhaps one position battle that may have gone under the radar is who gets moved in the depth chart behind Micah Parsons and Leighton Vander Esch this season.
Damone Clark has the experience of last season, but rookie DeMarvion Overshown and Jabril Cox aren't that far behind after impressive camps.
Micah Parsons has been glowing in his praise for Overshown, and we will get our first glimpse of "Agent Zero" in an NFL game environment.
For Cox, his ACL tear in 2021 means we haven't seen his talent on display often enough. He did play nine games last season but has impressed this offseason as he looks to be fully over his knee injury and now will get his chance to put himself back into calculations.
Brandon Aubrey's audition: The kicker position has been one major focus, and right now, Dallas only has one on its roster, that being former MLS and USFL star Aubrey.
With Tristan Vizcaino released earlier this week, Aubrey has the chance to stake his claim for the position.
As veterans in Robbie Gould, Mason Crosby, and Ryan Succop are all still available, it might only be preseason, but Aubrey has to perform well if he wants to be considered the job.
Tight end room: Just who out of the "Four Horsemen" we will see vs. the Jaguars remains to be seen, but whoever gets snaps will need to make them count.
Rookie Luke Schoonmaker plans to go at AT&T Stadium, and Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and Sean McKeon all might see game time.
While there is no "battle" for spots, as all are likely to feature in some capacity this season, seeing how they operate in Mike McCarthy's likely vanilla offense (due to it being preseason and not wanting to give anything about the "Texas Coast Offense'' away) could give us an indication of how the final depth chart might land.
