Saquon Sits Out: Cowboys' Micah Parsons Defends Giants' Barkley From 'Idiots'
A Dallas Cowboys defender helping a New York Giants playmaker is unheard of in the fall. In the spring, however, Parsons is playing peacemaker and helping his on-field rivals prepare for retirement.
Parsons, a looming threat both in the pass rush and social media, has spent this offseason digitally praising his Sunday opponents, previously pulling for the Philadelphia Eagles in February's Super Bowl before holding back on one Washington Commanders fan due to his respect for Terry McLaurin. He completed a de facto bingo card by inserting himself into the current contract situation around New York Giants rusher Saquon Barkley.
Barkley has opted not to sign a franchise tag with the Giants and Parsons is firmly in his corner. Parsons is firmly on board with a yearly couple against Barkley for the foreseeable future, calling out a Giants fan against the idea of extending the rusher due to his supposed decline in production in the latter stages of the year.
"That’s what happens when you the best players on your team you idiot!!" Parsons emphatically declared, accompanying his post with laughing emojis. "The scheme on Monday morning is we well not let SAQUON BARKLEY BEAT Us!! People just think we be out here playing free for all!! like gtfo! That mf is that offense! Pay him! [sic]"
If anyone in Dallas knows what Barkley is capable of, it's probably Parsons: though their paths didn't cross as Nittany Lions, each earned first-round consideration at Happy Valley, with Parsons landing in the NFC East three years after the lauded rusher.
Barkley's franchise tag would pay him just over $10 million this season. He has dealt with injuries throughout his career but burst back onto the national scene with a career-best 1,312 yards en route to guiding the Giants to their first playoff berth since 2016 and placing third in voting for the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year Award.
True to Parsons' word, he and his Cowboys compatriots haven't let Barkley beat them: the second overall pick from the 2018 draft has yet to be on the winning side in a matchup against Dallas, though he has put up 464 rushing yards and three scores in those matchups. If Barkley does not sign his franchise tag, he will not be eligible to partake in the team's offseason activities that begin next week.
