Cowboys Mike McCarthy Oversees Rookie Minicamp Virtually Due To Back Procedure
FRISCO - For the Dallas Cowboys and other teams with hopes of a deep playoff run, it all began on Thursday with the evaluation of new rookies at the beginning of rookie minicamp.
Unfortunately for Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, he missed it.... or, at least missed it in terms of being here inside The Star in person. McCarthy was unable to attend rookie minicamp due to a back "procedure'' that took place the week prior.
Rookie minicamp is an important part of the evaluation process for new draftees and undrafted free agents, and McCarthy arranged to be there via video conferencing. As rookie linebacker DeMarvion Overshown said, "He's been on Zoom calls with us. We know what he's going through and that he's going to be back soon. He's definitely been there, welcomed us like we were a vet."
Rookie minicamp began on Thursday, with the rookies taking the field for the first time on Saturday. Veterans will join them on Monday for Phase 2 of the offseason workout program, and organized team activities (OTAs) kick-off in two weeks.
McCarthy, 59, has reportedly been dealing with back issues for a while, and it's unknown when he'll return to The Star, but isn't expected to be out for an extended period of time.
McCarthy and the Cowboys are coming off a 2022 season that saw the team win a road playoff game for the first time since 1992 and make an appearance in the NFL Divisional Round of the playoffs where they lost to the San Francisco 49ers for the second-consecutive season.
