Cowboys Bolster Secondary, Draft Elite CB Cam Smith: NFL Mock
As the old saying goes, defense wins championships. For the Dallas Cowboys this might prove to be especially true with the weapons they have to work with on the defensive side of the ball.
Dallas, of course, looks to superstar cornerback Trevon Diggs to lead the way in the secondary.
However, there is no such thing as too much talent - which is why in The Draft Network's latest mock they give Diggs another elite cornerback to play across from, even if (oops!) they project the Cowboys to pick at No. 23 instead of No. 26. We'll make that adjustment ...
Rd. 1 No. 26 - Cam Smith - CB (South Carolina)
Opposite Diggs, the Cowboys desperately need a No. 2 cornerback. Smith, a six-foot, 188-pound cornerback prospect, could be a plug-and-play starter within defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s defense.
Smith’s skills in coverage—his stickiness in man coverage, ability to disrupt routes early by crowding receivers at the line of scrimmage, and outstanding ball skills—are undeniable, even if it hasn’t always come with interceptions (he had one this past season).
While Smith's junior season numbers might jump off the page, with only 27 total tackles and one interception, his sophomore numbers were rather impressive. He recorded career highs in tackles, interceptions and pass deflections as a sophomore with 41, three and 11 respectively.
Diggs is Diggs, helping the Cowboys field one of the best defenses in the NFL and keep opponents to 200.9 yards per game through the air with 59 total tackles and three interceptions.
Pairing him with another elite cornerback, such as Smith, could be a smart move for Dallas come April - and a move that could elevate the defense to Super Bowl-caliber.
