Dallas Cowboys Trade Rumors for Tight End? Or Believe Coach Grades on Jake Ferguson?
The tight end room was one of the biggest areas of uncertainty heading into the season for the Dallas Cowboys. After Dalton Schultz moved on to the Houston Texans, there was a thought that the room was heavy on bodies but rather light on talent.
Luke Schoonmaker was drafted in the second round, adding to the group with young tight ends Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot leading the way.
And now, six games in? Ferguson, in assuming a No. 1 role on offense, has shown his ability as a pass catcher. Through six games, Ferguson is third for both targets (21) and yards (190) on offense. And tight ends coach Lunda Wells has been impressed.
“Ferguson’s done a heck of a job handling the responsibility, preparing himself to get to this point,” Wells said. “With some of the success in the passing game, he's handling it very well every day he's coming in, continuing to work hard on the field and off the field, in meetings.”

Schultz was a beacon of production for the Cowboys offense as he was Dak Prescott's ultimate security blanket last year. For Ferguson, in just his second NFL season, the learning curve has come quickly ... as have rumors of Dallas looking elsewhere for help as the Oct. 31 trade deadline approaches. “He's doing a nice job doing some things that we call like 'sleep money,' meaning behind the scenes, in terms of with protections,” Wells said. “We look forward to this next half of the season for him and the group.”
