Brandin Cooks OUT: Gallup, Tolbert, Next Man Up for Cowboys Vs. Jets
ARLINGTON - The Dallas Cowboys will welcome the New York Jets to AT&T Stadium on Sunday, but it won't be the matchup everyone was hoping for. … with injuries playing key roles for both sides.
Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is out for the season after tearing his Achilles tendon in the fourth play of the season in Week 1.
Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy won't be able to face his former signal caller, and quarterback Dak Prescott will miss a meeting against his former NFC rival.
“Obviously I wanted to play against the guy,” said Prescott, who lost a Wild Card game against Rodgers and the Packers as a rookie in 2016. “But to say it diminishes an NFL game would be wild of me, especially understanding how great this defense is.”
Prescott who has dealt with his own season-ending injury, added, “Watch the way that they won that game the other night. They’ve got our respect and haven’t lost any bit of that.”
The Cowboys and the Jets both opened their seasons last week at MetLife Stadium. Dallas obliterated the New York Giants in a 40-0 win, while the Jets recovered from Rodgers' injury to beat the Buffalo Bills in overtime behind backup and former No. 2 overall pick, Zach Wilson.
The Jets are looking for the organization's first 2-0 start in eight seasons, while Dallas hopes to keep pace with the 2-0 Philadelphia Eagles, who beat the Vikings on Thursday night.
There will be plenty of focus on the defense for both teams, as the Jets sacked Bills' quarterback Josh Allen five times, and the Cowboys got to Daniel Jones for seven sacks last week. Both defenses combined for 21 quarterback hits and 57 pressures.
That especially matters to Dallas in terms of O-line health, as Zack Martin (groin) indicates he’s “feeling good. But Tyler Smith is ruled out, so Chuma Edoga starts. Dallas also has an injury concern with Brandin Cooks (knee) and he's out … meaning Micahel Gallup and Jalen Tolbert move up in the pecking order.
