Cowboys 'Don't Have a Chance!' 49ers Legend Steve Young Rips Dallas

One the best players in San Francisco Niners history - Steve Young - is taking his shot at the Dallas Cowboys ahead of this season, keeping the legendary rivalry going once again.

Thankfully for the sake of keeping true to NFL lore, the legendary NFC rivalry of the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers has been renewed over the past two postseasons, pinning two of football's most historical teams against each other with the season on the line.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they haven't been able to capture the kind of playoff magic they had in the early 1990s against the Niners during the past two playoff matchups. Both of Dallas' losses to San Francisco from this past season and the year before have ended in embarrassing fashion on the final play, including January's 19-12 loss in the Divisional Round.

And as a result, one the best players in Niners history is taking his shot at the Cowboys ahead of this season, keeping the rivalry going once again.

Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young didn't hold back when discussing Dallas' chances at contending this season while questioning the team's offensive play-calling. On the flip side, he praised 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who led San Francisco to the NFC Championship last season.

“The 49ers have a head coach who is as innovative as anybody in the league, at a time when the Cowboys last year are running 2015 plays and don’t have a chance,” Young said.

Who is Young calling out? Former Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore? Coach Mike McCarthy?

It certainly seems to be a dig that's intended at insulting the Cowboys directly rather than just being a passing comment in conversation. It's easy to imagine that Dallas fans will say Young's doubts are due to "saltiness" from his 1-2 record against the Cowboys in the NFC Championship during the '90s

But if it's a shot at Moore's play-calling, then maybe Young could be getting something different than what he expects from Dallas since McCarthy is taking over the offense this season.

Still, from Young's potentially-biased point of view, the 49ers are better suited for more postseason success due to Shanahan's brilliance.

“Kyle leans in and figures out ways to make it better for quarterbacks," Young said. "So we’re ahead of the game already right there. And then we have as good a roster as anybody. It’s not perfect, but it’s as good as anybody.”

As of now, neither team has an advantage in the all-time series, which is fittingly tied 19-19-1. Dallas currently has the bragging rights in the postseason (5-4), though the Niners have quickly closed the gap over the past two seasons.

But something will have to give this season. The Cowboys will get a chance to prove Young wrong when they travel to Levi's Stadium to take on the 49ers in Week 5 on Sunday, Oct. 8. And upon reflection, there is something telling about Steve Young's analysis. ... as he identifies the 49ers as "we.''
