New 'Redskins' Owner Makes Outrageous Cowboys 'America's Team' Claim

“I’ve seen the numbers. The Commanders were once the No. 1 franchise in the NFL back when they were the Redskins - not the Dallas Cowboys.'' - New Washington owner Josh Harris.

FRISCO - One of the most controversial ownership tenures in NFL history is now over with the ouster/sale involving the "asinine'' Dan Snyder in Washington. Now comes along a new era, with new owner Josh Harris wasting no time in dipping his toe into "controversy'' of his own. ... though with no scandal attached.

“It’s hard to imagine, but I’ve seen the numbers,'' said Harris, who took over publicly with appearances with media and fans on Friday. "The Commanders were once the No. 1 franchise in the NFL back when they were the Redskins - not the Dallas Cowboys.''

There is a lot to unpack there. It is true that from 1982 to 1991, Washington won three Super Bowls. But sandwiched on either side of that admitted success was Dallas winning Super Bowls from 1971 to 1995 - five of them. Additionally, by the time Washington won that 1982 Super Bowl title, another title - "America's Team'' - was already etched in stone, about five years previous.

Most interestingly, though, is Harris' use of the monicker "Redskins.'' That's been a sort of dirty word in the NFL, understandably so. But it echoes to the possibility of another name change in Washington, which would be a fourth in the span of about six years or so.

Almost as much as big wins or star players - and in the last 30 years Washington is not even close to the same level as Dallas there - is franchise stability. Changing the name of your team with the frequency that some guys change their underwear is the antithesis of "stable.''

Maybe the Harris group, which also includes Magic Johnson, will offer a real foundation of success, something Snyder often seemed like he wasn't really even trying to achieve. But another name change won't cause the "Redskins'' to "again'' be America's favorite team, as Harris claims was once the case. And in his heart of hearts, he knows that.

"The opportunity is up here,'' Harris said, gestured with his hand held high - you know, where "America's Team'' is perched. "And the work is up here.”
