Super Bowl QBs: Where Do Aikman And Staubach Rank?

Two Dallas Cowboys legends star in a ranking of the top quarterback matchups in every Super Bowl to date.

This week's Super Bowl promises to be a matchup for the ages, the past vs. the future, the greatest of all-time against the greatest of today. As such, the fact it sits atop of CBS' ranking of every Super Bowl quarterback matchup comes as no surprise.

But the five-time World Champion Dallas Cowboys have rightfully made their presence felt among the remaining top 10 matchups, and it seems only fitting that we use this to discuss the two best quarterbacks in Cowboys history (Sorry Tony).

5 - Roger Staubach vs. Terry Bradshaw, Super Bowls X and XIII

Perhaps not the best of memories for those old enough to remember these losses, however, it doesn't take away from the gargantuan matchup that was Bradshaw versus 'Captain America' Staubach. With nine Pro Bowls, six rings, and two golden jackets between them, these are games that any Cowboys fan young or old must rewatch.

Staubach may not have been able to overcome Pittsburgh's infamous 'Steel Curtain' defense, but given that both games were lost by just four points, his accomplishments should not be ignored. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Staubach passed for 432 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions across these two games.

The creator of the 'Hail Mary,' Staubach won Super Bowls VI and XII before retiring after the 1979 season, having passed for 22,700 yards and 153 touchdowns throughout his illustrious career.

10 - Troy Aikman vs Jim Kelly, Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII

Moving on to more happy memories for Dallas, and the success of the early 1990s. A matchup that again featured two future Hall of Famers at quarterback, with head coach Jimmy Johnson at the helm, the 'How 'bout them Cowboys' era had begun. The Aikman led Cowboys went 2-0 up against the Kelly led Bills who notoriously lost four straight Super Bowls between '90 and '94.

Aikman went on to win Super Bowl MVP in '92, going 22 of 30 for 273 yards and four touchdowns, an offensive masterclass by one of the most potent offenses in league history alongside Michael Irvin and Emmitt Smith.

Retiring after the 2000 season, Aikman finished with six Pro Bowl appearances, 32,942 passing yards, and 165 touchdowns having brought back the glory days of America's Team.
