‘Super Bowl Secrets!’ Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Consults Micah Parsons on Roster Moves

FRISCO - At some point soon, the Dallas Cowboys are likely to make Micah Parsons the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

In a sense, that will make him “business partners” with team owner Jerry Jones …

Which explains a new revelation regarding how Parsons and Jones just spent Super Bowl Sunday in Las Vegas.

Jerry and Micah

“Yeah, that’s what I like about ‘J,” Micah tells ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith (as transcribed by RJ Ochoa), labeling Jones “one of the best GMs and owners.” “We just sit and talk from before the game until the whole half about players I want to be in, players I want to be around. ‘Who do I need?' 'Who do I want to be with?' (The) future of our team.''

"Before the game until the whole first half'' ... meaning? Yes, Parsons sat together with Jones at Allegiant Stadium as the Chiefs beat the 49ers in OT in The Big Game.

And how did that pairing come together?

"Jerry sees me walking out the Wynn,'' Micah relayed. "He says, ‘Hey, you going to the Super Bowl?’ I said ‘Yea, I’m going.’ He said, ‘Come see us.''

Micah added, ‘Hey you got any extra tickets? I’ve got some homeboys that want to come.''

And next thing Micah knows, Jones arranges for Parsons and his "homeboys'' to sit in the owner's suite via four extra tickets.

This tale does remind us of a couple of things that belie some Jerry myths.

One, he is, contrary to what some outside critics think, a "listener'' (though we imagine that a Jerry/Micah conversation that lasted over "two or three hours,'' as Parsons said, featured lots of talking.)

And two, he is admired and beloved by players.

There is an inherent danger in giving players too much real authority in this area; personnel boss Will McClay is in charge of this department, not roster members. But Parsons - who busied himself in recent days hosting his news-making podcast at the Super Bowl, hanging with and "ruining'' Stephen A. and being named MVP of the NBA’s All-Star Celebrity Game - is, like QB Dak Prescott, about to wield a great deal of financial power here inside The Star.

And Jones is wise to recognize that ... and to employ leading players as his advocates.

"That’s just dope to have that type of feedback with an owner that loves to hear your ideas and what you think and where the team can be,'' Parsons said. "Jerry’s been pretty amazing like that with my family and stuff like that.''
