DeVonta Smith on Philadelphia Eagles Kelly Green Uniforms: 'An Every-Game Thing!'
The Philadelphia Eagles will wear Kelly Green uniforms for their Week 7 matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football, marking the first time they've worn the throwback colors since the opening week of the 2010 season. DeVonta Smith believes the uniforms should come back on a full-time basis.
While the Eagles still wore their typical midnight green practice jerseys Wednesday, many players debuted their Kelly Green helmets. And count Smith among the biggest fans of the iconic look.
"I think this should just be the normal uniform," Smith said, per Zach Berman of PHLY. "This should be an every-game thing."
Kelly Green was the primary color of the Eagles from 1935-1995, before they switched to Midnight Green in 1996. A new generation of Eagles fans became enamored with Kelly Green when Philadelphia wore it in Week 1 of the 2010 season to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their NFL Championship victory over the Green Bay Packers. The NFL's controversial one-helmet rule kept the Eagles and a variety of other teams from wearing throwback helmets beginning in 2013, but said regulation was repealed before the 2022 season.
Smith is hardly the only person that would like to see Kelly Green come back on a full-time basis. When the latest Kelly Green throwbacks were introduced in late July, pass rusher Josh Sweat expressed his support for them becoming the team's primary uniforms once again.
"They need to be our permanent," Sweat said. "We can wear the black as an alternate. But the Kelly Green needs to be the main."
For now, the uniforms will be a throwback worn twice this season; Sunday against the Dolphins and then again in Week 12 against the Buffalo Bills.
The reality is that the Eagles can make more total money selling the Kelly Greens as an alternate jersey, while also still making money off of selling Midnight Green as the primary look. As always, these things come down to what produces the most green.
