Looking for a fresh start with the Philadelphia Eagles, quarterback Marcus Mariota could be looking for another one soon according to NFL.com.

With their final preseason game in the books, the Philadelphia Eagles have one major date to look forward to before diving fully into regular season preparations.

Cut day is coming with Tuesday afternoon just around the corner and one Eagles player that could be cut according to NFL.com is quarterback Marcus Mariota.

“Who says the backup quarterback is the most popular man in town?,” says NFL.com. “That doesn’t appear to be the case in Philadelphia, where Jalen Hurts is adored but his prospective backup has become the focus of consternation this preseason.

Mariota initially appeared to be a smart addition as Hurts’ backup this offseason, despite his controversial departure from Atlanta. But after two lackluster preseason outings and a series of rough camp reports, Mariota’s job feels at risk.”

Once thought to be the future of the Tennessee Titans franchise when he was drafted in No. 2 of the 2015 NFL Draft after a Heisman-winning career with the Oregon Ducks. Mariota flamed out there before jumping around a bit until he landed with the Atlanta Falcons last season.

There, he ultimately lost his job to younger quarterback Desmond Ridder, and now he may be losing his backup job to another ... at least that's what the Philly fans and media have been clamoring for.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has made it clear that Mariota is the QB2, but rookie Tanner McKee out of Stanford has been impressive. The sixth-round quarterback has a growing group of supporters this summer.

Though highlhly unlikely at this point, if Philadelphia cuts Mariota, they’ll save about $3 million while taking on $1.9 million in dead cap.

That’s not nothing, but it’s not a lot either if the team truly believes McKee could already be capable of backup duties.
