Falcons WR Camp Preview: Did Atlanta Get Drake London Help?

The Atlanta Falcons will have a new-look trio of starting receivers after two new signings to help out Drake London in the passing game.
In this story:

On paper, receiver was a position of need for the Atlanta Falcons heading into the offseason after spending their 2022 first-round pick on USC's Drake London. And despite having a productive rookie year, there still appeared to be a need for more. So how did general manager Terry Fontenot address it this offseason?

The Falcons made six additions through free agency in hopes of bolstering their playmaking depth. Some of those signings included veterans like Mack Hollins and Scotty Miller, who have a combined 10 years of NFL experience.

Hollins, heading into his seventh season in the pros since being taken in the fourth round from the University of North Carolina, is fresh off a career year with the Las Vegas Raiders. Essentially operating as the Raiders' second option due to injuries keeping tight end Darren Waller off the field, Hollins totaled 690 yards and four touchdowns on 57 receptions.

At 6-foot-4, the ex-Tarheel gives the Falcons another big-bodied receiver to pair with London on the outside. That leaves the slot presumably to fellow new signing Miller. Who, after spending four seasons with the NFC South rival, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is looking to get back to the level of play he showcased in 2020, totaling 501 yards and three touchdowns on 33 receptions.

Since that first season of playing with legendary quarterback Tom Brady, Miller's production quickly diminished to just 223 yards on just 28 receptions over the past two years.

After losing Olamide Zaccheaus to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, the Falcons' second-leading receiver, the hope is Hollins and Miller can help make up for the void in the passing game.

Yet, there is still the question of fellow the Falcons' current receiving corps is enough to make a playoff push. Atlanta finished last season with the second-fewest passing yards per game average among all teams, which, even with one of the league's best-running games, isn't good enough.

Judging by last season's playoff field, only two teams, the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants, made it to the postseason without ranking inside the top-15 for passing yards per game.

Projected WR Depth Chart

X-Receiver: Drake London

Z-Receiver: Mack Hollins

Slot: Scotty Miller

While the Falcons' trio of starting receivers isn't flashy on paper like other teams boast, getting the best out of former No. 4 overall pick Kyle Pitts could go a long way in helping improve the passing game.
