SI Fantasy's Fabiano Includes Aaron Rodgers in 'Five Quarterbacks to Avoid'

Jets' QB1 has seen his average draft position drop in 2023 fantasy football projections
In this story:

A healthy Aaron Rodgers will most certainly be better than anyone who took snaps for the New York Jets in 2022, but the 39-year-old quarterback may not be the fantasy football gem that he once was.

Both claims can be, and likely are, true.

While Rodgers's presence alone should make for an uptick in Gang Green's offensive production, the four-time NFL MVP has seen his fantasy football value drop over the past year.

The decrease in Rodgers's appeal to fantasy managers likely correlates with his waning mobility. Almost all top-scoring fantasy quarterbacks feature a prominent rushing component to their repertoires.

For example, Rodgers totaled 94 yards and one touchdown on the ground while averaging 2.8 yards per carry last year. Those numbers pale in comparison to the 6.1 yards per carry and seven TD rushes that Josh Allen (Bills) accounted for in 2022.

Classified as a good backup option in most leagues, Rodgers currently sits at QB16 in SI Fantasy's latest player rankings.

Sports Illustrated's Michael Fabiano placed Rodgers amongst "five quarterbacks to avoid with your valuable draft capital" in his "potential fantasy bust" series. Lamar Jackson (Ravens), Kyler Murray (Cardinals), Matthew Stafford (Rams) and Jared Goff (Lions) joined the Jets' decorated starter on the list of risky picks.

From "These Five Quarterbacks Could Be Fantasy Busts in 2023":

— Aaron Rodgers, Jets —

I like to look at trends, and the Jets have a bad one when it comes to quarterbacks. They haven’t had a 4,000-yard passer since Joe Namath … in 1967! Even the great Brett Favre failed in his one season with the Men in Green. That’s not to suggest Rodgers is destined to fall into this trend, but I’d beware about projecting him to post big totals like he did in his more recent MVP campaigns.

— Michael Fabiano

Earlier this offseason, Fabiano projected Rodgers's 2023 totals to reach "around 4,000 passing yards and 25-28 touchdown passes."

In 2022, Rodgers totaled 3,695 pass yards, 26 TD passes and 12 interceptions.
