Aaron Rodgers Earns Top 10 Status from Sports Illustrated Broadcaster
With training camp still nearly two months away, it appears to be Quarterback Ranking Season around the National Football League.
Quarterback-turned-analyst Chris Simms is halfway through his Top 40 Countdown with AFC East signal callers Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones coming in at No. 21 and No. 20, respectively.
ESPN's Dan Orlovsky, who, like Simms, spent time as an NFL QB before moving into the media world, will likely unveil his list at some point in the coming weeks. Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano ranked all 32 teams' backup quarterbacks in a piece that debuted on Friday morning on the SI NFL main page.
Meanwhile, SI's Robin Lundberg announced his NFL Top 10 field generals in a rapid rankings video clip.
So, where did New York Jets' quarterback Aaron Rodgers land amongst his peers?
Lundberg slotted Rodgers at No. 7 "out of respect" the broadcaster said. To that point, it's hard to dismiss a four-time NFL MVP even when in his twilight years.
The 39-year old Rodgers is only two years removed from back-to-back MVP seasons and he likely has something left in the tank. The future Hall-of-Famer ranked 11th amongst NFL leaders in pass yards (3,695) and seventh in touchdown passes (26) last year.
In Lundberg's Top 10, Rodgers was sandwiched in between two young bucks. Jacksonville Jaguar Trevor Lawrence ranked at No. 8 overall while Los Angeles Charger Justin Herbert held the No. 6 spot.
Kansas City Chiefs' star Patrick Mahomes, the reigning MVP, headlined Lundberg's countdown in the No. 1 spot.
On the SI Sportsbook odds board, Rodgers (+1400) was sixth overall on the list of favorites to win the 2023 MVP award. His 14-to-1 odds were shorter than the +1600 number assigned to Lamar Jackson and Tua Tagovailoa.
