Already Down Four Cornerbacks, Jets Lose Fifth in Week 6 Win

With Gardner and Reed already out, starting slot CB suffers hamstring injury

The New York Jets entered Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles with only four healthy cornerbacks, two of whom were gameday elevations off the Practice Squad.

Already missing concussed starters Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed as well as hamstrung backups Brandin Echols and Justin Hardee, the Jets saw starting slot cornerback Michael Carter II suffer an injury that caused him to miss multiple snaps during the fourth quarter.

The injury occurred on third-down completion to AJ Brown with 11:17 remaining in the game. Carter II appeared to be in some discomfort and was seen grabbing his right leg before going into the blue injury tent.

"Michael Carter is dealing with a hamstring," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh following the win.

Carter II played 54 of 70 defensive snaps and made five solo stops for the Jets in the 20-14 victory. With Bryce Hall and Carter II leading the way for a unit that featured PS call-ups Craig James and Tae Hayes, the Jets picked off three passes and cooled down the Eagles in their first-ever victory over the franchise.

Saleh did not provide an update on Carter's status when he addressed reporters on Monday afternoon.

"No updates right now on any of the injuries and with the bye week, we’re taking our time on all that," said the third-year head coach.

While Hardee, who doubles as a special teams captain, is on Injured Reserve, the other banged up defensive backs will look to get healthy during the well-timed bye week. Reed and Echols have both missed two games in a row. Meanwhile, Gardner was not diagnosed with a concussion until this past Saturday.

"[Coming off two good wins] you’d like to keep playing, but we have a lot of guys that feel like we can get healthy over the next couple of weeks," said Saleh on Monday. "Obviously, our cornerback situation. Trying to get Echols back, try to get DJ back, try to get Sauce back. That’ll help the DB room."
