Jets Make Quarterback Change in Third Quarter vs. Bills
The New York Jets sent starting quarterback Zach Wilson to the bench late in the third quarter against the Buffalo Bills.
Following a Bills' punt, backup Tim Boyle entered the game for a 1st-and-10 at the Jets' 34-yard line. Buffalo held a 29-6 lead with 2:16 remaining in the third.
"Twenty-nine to six, just trying to see if we could get something going on the offensive side of the ball," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh on making the in-game QB change.
Wilson was 7-of-15 passing for 81 yards, one touchdown and one interception at the time of his exit. He had a 57.9 quarterback rating and the offense was 0-for-7 on third down under his direction.
The former No. 2 overall draft pick also rushed four times for 15 yards before yielding to Boyle. Wilson took five sacks and averaged 5.4 yards per pass.
Boyle completed his first three passes for 14 total yards, but a Garrett Wilson fumble ended his first drive in Bills' territory. The second-string signal caller finished 7-of-14 passing for 33 yards and one interception. He had a one-yard rush for a first down and posted a 26.5 passer rating in the 32-6 setback.
The 29-year-old Boyle had 17 career appearances, including three starts, under his belt prior to Sunday's appearance. In those games, he totaled 574 yards passing, three touchdowns and eight interceptions.
As for whether Boyle will continue to take the snaps moving forward, Saleh was non-committal.
"We’re going to watch the tape and we’ll make a decision tomorrow," said Saleh.
