Jets Send Rookie Camp Invitation to Small-School Quarterback with Big-time Resume
The 2022 Stats Perform Walter Payton Award recipient has landed a rookie minicamp tryout with the New York Jets.
Incarnate Word quarterback Lindsey Scott, who won the annual award given to the top offensive player in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, will have a direct opportunity to impress Jets' brass, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero.
Scott's 2022 achievements certainly make him worthy of a NFL rookie camp invitation. The Division I FCS All-American compiled video game-escque numbers in his lone season at UIW.
The former Nicholls State signal caller, who began his collegiate career at Missouri, averaged an eye-popping 11.6 yards per pass attempt during an 11-game regular season schedule. More than 15 percent of the passes Scott attempted over that span were scoring plays as he racked up 50 touchdowns to only four interceptions.
The uber-mobile Scott spearheaded UIW's historic season, which ended with the No. 3 national ranking in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 after a 35-32 semifinal loss to North Dakota State.
By taking first place in the Walter Payton Award voting, Scott joined a distinguished group of past recipients that includes Tony Romo, Jimmy Garoppolo, Taylor Heinicke and the late Steve McNair.
The Jets have also reportedly extended a rookie camp invite to the man who finished second to Scott in the race for the 2022 Walter Payton Award. Fordham quarterback Tim DeMorat is scheduled to try out, meaning the Jets' three-day rookie minicamp will include the nation's top-two leading passers from DI FCS. DeMorat (407.6) led America in passing average while Scott (334.7) ranked second last season.
The 5-foot-10 Scott is a bit undersized compared to the prototypical NFL quarterback, but he has the arm strength to air it out, especially while on the run. He earned an invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Pasadena. The dual-threat field general passed for 56 yards (9 attempts) and ran for 31 yards (5 rushes) in the annual pre-draft all-star game.
Scott was profiled in the Jets Country Draft Series with NFL Draft Bible founder Ric Serritella as a possible developmental quarterback option for Gang Green.
