Jets' WR1 Injures Ankle During Practice Rep
It wasn't what the fans in attendance were hoping to see.
Garrett Wilson suffered an injury while pursuing a 25-yard pass down the left sideline.
Covering Wilson off the line of scrimmage, cornerback D.J. Reed cleanly broke up the play, but the New York Jets' highly-regarded receiver was shaken up during the rep.
Wilson jogged gingerly off the field toward a member of the team's training staff. He was unavailable for the remainder of the practice session.
"We were just checking out his ankle. All indications are that he'll be okay. We're just going through procedure," said head coach Robert Saleh following Thursday's preseason practice in Florham Park. "It's not something, I don't think, we're concerned about."
Saleh, who showed no signs of panic, could not confirm if Wilson was going for an MRI.
Wilson, the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, has assumed the No. 1 receiver role for the Aaron Rodgers-led offense. The former first-round draft pick looks to build upon an 1,100-yard freshman campaign with Gang Green.
Wilson has earned praise from Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, on multiple occasions.
"He’s so dynamic with his feet," said Rodgers after Practice No. 6. "I think if he adds five or ten more pounds of muscle, he’s going to be really, really difficult to handle, but in the meantime, he’s got all the skill set you want, plus the attitude and the work ethic and the character."
Rising up fantasy football draft boards, Wilson projects to receive a statistical boost from the chance to work with Rodgers. Earlier this week, Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano tabbed Wilson as his "darkhorse pick" to win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.
