Reportedly Pursuing Receiver Allen Lazard, Jets Could Be Hinting at Resolution in Their Quarterback Quest

Is Gang Green attempting to entice a commitment from Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers?

The New York Jets need a reliable second wide receiver and their reported pursuit of free agent Allen Lazard could be telling.

Lazard has appeared in 57 NFL regular season games, all coming as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

The sixth-year professional set career highs in receptions (60) and receiving yards (788) in 2022 with Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterback.

According to a tweet from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday morning, the Jets “are actively working to reach an agreement” with Lazard as the Rodgers Watch crawls along.

Securing a receiver who has worked well with Rodgers could help convince Green Bay’s 39-year old quarterback to join the Jets.

Rodgers recently spoke on record while attending a charity flag football event in Southern California this past Saturday.

Speaking to former Jets receiver Brandon Marshall, the four-time NFL MVP quarterback suggested a decision on his playing future is coming soon.

In a video clip posted by I AM ATHLETE pod, Rodgers said, “Stay tuned. It won’t be long. There’s a time limit to all this.”

The “time limit” is likely shrinking as the official NFL free agent signing period kicks off on Wednesday, March 15 at 4:00 pm ET. Realistically, the Jets need to know what is happening with Rodgers before they can embark on the rest of their offseason plan.

SI’s Albert Breer reported that Rodgers, who is guaranteed $59.465 million in cash if he plays in 2023, would count $15.74 million against his team’s salary cap
