Jets' Weekly Descent Continues in Sports Illustrated's NFL Power Rankings
The New York Jets are moving in the wrong direction when it comes to Sports Illustrated's NFL Power Rankings.
Following a second straight setback, the Jets (4-5) have dropped again in the weekly results. After moving up to No. 12 overall by defeating the New York Giants, the Green & White fell into the No. 17 slot as a product of a Week 9 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. In the wake of the 16-12 setback to the Las Vegas Raiders, Robert Saleh's team has subsequently descended to 20th out of 32 NFL franchises.
Gang Green is currently sandwiched in between the No. 19 Denver Broncos (4-5) and the No. 21 Indianapolis Colts (5-5). The Jets' Week 11 opponent is also sliding. The Buffalo Bills (5-5) have fallen to No. 14 overall after back-to-back losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and the Broncos.
The No. 8 Miami Dolphins (5-3) lead the AFC East while the New England Patriots are buried in the No. 30 slot. The Philadelphia Eagles (8-1), whose lone loss came at the hands of the Jets, retain the No. 1 overall ranking.
The Jets have not scored a touchdown in their last 11 quarters. Their 16.0 points per game is the third-worst scoring average on the circuit. Quarterback Zach Wilson has thrown only one TD pass in his five most-recent games and it was on 50-yard screen play to Breece Hall.
New York's offense has been particularly ineffective in the redzone, posting a league-low 22.73 touchdown percentage inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
"We have self-inflicted wounds. It’s been the same story for the last couple of weeks. We have to figure it out," said Jets' head coach Robert Saleh. "We have to figure out how to stop shooting ourselves in the foot when we get those opportunities."
The Jets are currently a 7.5-point road underdog in Sunday's AFC East battle against the Bills in Buffalo.
From NFL Week 10 Power Rankings:
20. New York Jets (4–5)
Last week: loss at Las Vegas, 16–12
Next week: at Buffalo
I don’t think I can feel any worse for Zach Wilson who, bless his heart, is carrying the weight of a city on his shoulders. I do think he’s going to be a good NFL quarterback at some point when he’s a bit older. And man, there are some plays he made Sunday night that only a few people who walk this Earth have the capability of doing. That said, I don’t know what else the Jets can do. Robert Saleh talked about schematic possibilities they have yet to try. But is there a point where you are wringing the poor kid out? At times, Wilson just looked mentally exhausted. That said, what a story it would be if he could break through this quarterbacking equivalent of a long writer’s block.
