Waived by Jets, Aaron Rodgers's Friend Lands in AFC South
As it turns out, quarterback Aaron Rodgers won't play again for the New York Jets this season, and neither will Tim Boyle.
Making his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers said he won't be making his return to game action in the next three weeks.
"If I was 100 percent today, I'd be definitely pushing to play [Sunday vs. Washington]," said Rodgers on Tuesday. "The fact is I'm not. I've been working hard to get closer to that. I'm still 14 weeks tomorrow from my surgery. Being medically cleared at 100 percent healed is not realistic at 14 weeks."
On the same day that Rodgers made his declaration, the Houston Texans signed the recently-released Boyle to their Practice Squad. The Tuesday workout and subsequent signing was first reported by NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo. Boyle, who joined the Jets as a free agent this past April, was a teammate of Rodgers during the 2019 and 2020 seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
Boyle made back-to-back starts for the Jets and the results were underwhelming. The offense totaled one touchdown in home losses to Miami and Atlanta. In nine quarters of play, Boyle went 48-of-77 passing for 360 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted four times and posted a 56.2 quarterback rating.
The Jets released Boyle on December 5 and subsequently signed Brett Rypien onto the 53-man roster off the Seattle Seahawks' Practice Squad.
"Tim is awesome," said Saleh one day after the team cut ties with the backup quarterback. "We all love Tim, but this is more trying to get another arm in here, Ryp [Brett Rypien], and just see what he has."
Saleh didn't completely close the door on Boyle eventually returning at that time.
"We appreciate him," said Saleh. "We are not saying he won’t come back in terms of practice squad and all of that but appreciate everything he has done."
Boyle owns an 0-5 career record as an NFL starter.
The Jets currently have three quarterbacks on their active 53-man roster — Rypien, Zach Wilson and Trevor Siemian. Wilson, the starter, is in concussion protocol after exiting the Week 15 road loss to Miami late in the first half.
