Jets Show Frustration through Social Media Activity
Breece Hall deleted the post and Sauce Gardner deleted his account.
The New York Jets’ two second-year players passionately reacted to the team’s Week 2 loss on the social media site formerly known as Twitter. Following the 30-10 drubbing by the Dallas Cowboys, Hall and Gardner displayed their frustration in the public forum.
After gaining 147 yards on 11 touches in the season-opening win over the Buffalo Bills, Hall carried the ball only four times against the Cowboys. The running back’s post-game X post contained four football emojis followed by an ellipsis, apparently referring to his lighter-than-desired workload. Hall deleted the message later on Sunday evening.
Hall, who is on a “pitch count” after recovering from a torn ACL, also voiced his frustration while speaking to reporters following the loss.
“I only got four touches. That’s why we struggled. But it is what it is. I think we just got down early today and kind of just abandoned the run,” said Hall.
It wasn't the first time that Hall has portrayed frustration through social media. He sent out a cryptic tweet on July 27 when Dalvin Cook made an official free-agent visit and deleted it shortly after posting.
Gardner, the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, appeared to take exception to a fellow X user who attributed CeeDee Lamb’s impressive performance to a lack of effectiveness by the All-Pro cornerback. Targeted 13 times, Lamb made 11 catches for 143 yards.
The 23-year-old Gardner reposted a listing of Lamb’s stat line with a comment that said, “Damnn Y’all really love sayin my name on this app lol. He didn’t catch a ball on me today. Source: me.” The Jets’ top cover corner deactivated his X account soon thereafter but has since rejoined the social media site.
The Cowboys chose to move Lamb around across their formation in an attempt to create a more favorable matchup for the WR1.
"If you go back to training camp and even last year, we were moving CeeDee around," said Cowboys' head coach Mike McCarthy after the Week 2 win. "You know with Brandin’s [Cooks] injury and not playing today, we were expecting some more double cover on Ceedee, 'cause he’s been seeing that of late. Moving him around is frankly just part of our offense."
After the game, Gardner provided an assessment of his performance through the season’s first two weeks.
“I dropped a pick today, of course I didn’t like that but for me, personally, it was pretty solid,” said Gardner. “I don’t think I gave up that many yards today, I know I missed a couple of tackles, I got to make those.”
Hall, Gardner and the Jets return home to MetLife Stadium for a Week 3 divisional game against the New England Patriots, who are off to an 0-2 start. The game will kick off on Sunday, September 24 at 1:00 pm ET.
