'Bad Blood'? Chiefs' Travis Kelce Responds to Taylor Swift Treatment by Patriots
Despite being an admitted "Swiftie," New England Patriots' notoriously Grinchy coach Bill Belichick was having none of the Taylor Swift talk leading up to last weekend's game in Foxboro. His organization, fortunately, was in a more welcoming mood.
On his New Heights podcast with brother Jason this week, Kansas City Chiefs' star Travis Kelce thanked the Patriots for giving a warm reception at Gillette Stadium to his celebrity girlfriend. A couple of times during the game the giant video board inside the stadium flashed to Swift, who cheered on Kelce wearing a Chiefs sweatshirt in a suite.
For the most part, Patriots fans responded with cheers.
"I will say this, they showed Taylor at the game and you don't see an entire home team fanbase go insane for somebody wearing the opposite team's colors," Kelce said. "Just shows you how amazing that girl is."
Swift watched the game beside her father, Scott, and Patrick Mahomes' wife, Brittany. During her first "appearance" on the screen, he waved a blew a kiss.
It may be uncomfortable - even unthinkable - for Gillette Stadium to cheer for an opposing fan. But in a 3-11 season trending toward the team's worst in 30 years, fans are obviously looking for anything to be positive about.
"They went absolutely insane when they showed Taylor on the screen," Kelce said. "There might have been a few 'Brads' and 'Chads' that were booing, but for the most part everybody was screaming their heads off."
Some NFL fans have been angered (jealous?) by the attention the pop star receives at games and on TV during broadcasts. In an interview with TIME magazine for being named "Person of the Year" Swift slapped the funny label on her haters.
“I’m just there to support Travis," Swift said. "I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
'Blank Space': Bill Belichick Dismisses Travis Kelce-Taylor Swift Ahead of Patriots Hosting Chiefs
Kelce, who was relatively quiet on the field during the Chiefs' 27-17 victory over the Pats, said he was pleasantly surprised by New England's hospitality. Gillette Stadium was the first NFL venue Swift played in, during her 2010 tour.
"Taylor's on record saying that that stadium is one of the funnest that she's played at," Kelce said. "For them to show her, just showing her some love. So shout out to the Patriots for doing that."
