Rams' Stetson Bennett vs. Chargers' Max Duggan: Rematch At SoFi Stadium?
The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers will kick off their 2023 campaigns with a preseason showdown on Saturday night, but to a pair of rookie quarterbacks, it will be much more than just an exhibition game.
Both the Rams and Chargers drafted rookie quarterbacks this year, with the former selecting Georgia's Stetson Bennett and the latter taking TCU's Max Duggan.
Although neither quarterback has been announced as their team's starter, they will almost certainly get their first glimpse of NFL action. In a fun coincidence, their pro careers will begin in the same place their college ones came to an end.
In January, Georgia and TCU met at SoFi Stadium for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. The game was not close at all, with Bennett's Bulldogs running all over Duggan's Horned Frogs in a 65-7 beatdown, the most lopsided championship game in college football history.
It was a storybook ending for Bennett, who led Georgia to its second straight title, but a bitter disappointment to a magical season for Duggan.
Now the two quarterbacks are set to see each other on the same field again seven months later, and they aren't the only ones from that game playing on Saturday.
The Rams also drafted Bennett's Georgia teammate in offensive lineman Warren McLendon, as well as offensive lineman Steve Avila and cornerback Tre'Vius Tomlinson (nephew of Chargers legend LaDainian Tomlinson) from TCU. Meanwhile, the Chargers added two of Duggan's favorite receivers in Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis.
Bennett and Duggan may be beginning their NFL careers on Saturday, but it won't be the first time they've seen each other in this venue. Of course, Bennett and the Rams will be hoping for another win to kick off the new campaign.
