Jim Irsay: Colts 'Careful' to Avoid Being Rams
The Los Angeles Rams are in uncharted territory during Sean McVay's tenure as coach.
Fresh off a disappointing 5-12 season, the Rams have been forced to move on from several impact players, including cornerback Jalen Ramsey, linebacker Bobby Wagner and outside linebacker Leonard Floyd, as they battled salary cap struggles.
It's posed the debate of whether Rams general manager Les Snead's aggressive approach of trading draft picks for players was truly the best route to take ... and Los Angeles' Super Bowl win last year certainly acts in favor of the philosophy.
But Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay doesn't necessarily see it that way.
Via NBC Sports, Irsay told reporters that he's looking at the Rams' current situation as something of a buyer-beware teaching moment.
“There was an article recently saying the Rams mortgaged their future," Irsay said, "and now they’re paying for it after they won the Super Bowl and had all that success, with the draft picks not being there.
"To me, that’s what you have to be careful about.”
Across the last five seasons, the Rams have made three playoff trips and two Super Bowl appearances, walking away with the trophy last February.
In that same time span, the Colts have a pair of postseason visits but have mustered just one victory, a wildcard victory over the Houston Texans in Jan. 2019.
But for Irsay, the priority seems to be on building sustained success rather than going all-in on a trophy ... though the Rams were above .500 in each of McVay's first five years.
Ultimately, it's merely a philosophical difference between Indianapolis and Los Angeles - with the latter holding a recent title to support its cause.
