The Los Angeles Rams received unexpected news Saturday night when running back Sony Michel retired in sudden fashion.

A 2018 first-round pick by the New England Patriots, Michel retires at just 28 years old, seemingly in the middle of his prime. He retires with 3,243 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, plus two Super Bowl rings, one with New England in 2018 and another with L.A. in 2021. Although his career was brief, Michel made the most of his time time in the league.

For a testament to the impact Michel left, look no further than the Rams' comments after his retirement. Michel spent just one season with the Rams in 2021 before re-joining them as a free agent in June, but his role on the Super Bowl-winning team won't be forgotten. Coach Sean McVay, who broke the news of Michel's retirement, praised the running back's competitiveness in a heartfelt statement on Saturday night.

"The epitome of a pro, great competitor and his next chapter is going to be exciting," McVay said. "He's got so many gifts that he can offer to people and so we'll wish him the best. It's a bummer, but his body's feeling like it's talking to him and I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the competitor that he is."

McVay added that Michel came to his office on Saturday morning and explained how he was feeling, which left McVay disappointed over losing the running back, but happy that he was at peace with the decision. McVay went on to say that there's "a possibility" of adding another running back, but he feels good about the current group.

Defensive lineman Aaron Donald also showed support for Michel in the wake of his retirement in a brief, but poignant statement.

"Well, I wish the best for him and I'm sure he made the right decision for him and his family," Donald said.

Michel retires leaving a big impact in his wake, and the Rams are looking forward to seeing what awaits him.
