Where's Gus? Ravens Coach Harbaugh Updates Edwards & Dobbins Availability
The Baltimore Ravens have been without both of their top two running backs for OTAs, as J.K. Dobbins has not participated due to their voluntary nature, while Gus Edwards has been at the facility but not working with the team.
Yet, good news is on the horizon for the Ravens as head coach John Harbaugh updated the media on the statuses of both running backs recently.
"I think minicamp, partially ready I'm hearing," Harbaugh said about Edwards. "Training camp he's supposed to be fully ready. He just wasn't quite ready to get back out and practice yet – no setback. Maybe they're being a little cautious, but that's what they're doing."
Edwards played just nine games last season after missing all of 2021. He rushed for 433 yards and three touchdowns, proving to be a capable second option to Dobbins. But injuries have been an issue for both.
When speaking about Dobbins, Harbaugh stated that he wants the ex-Ohio State Buckeye beyond his expiring rookie deal. That was a response to the third-year back posting some cryptic tweets about his future on Twitter.
"We want him [Dobbins] back (next season), but who knows the future?" said Harbaugh. "Nobody knows the future."
When fully healthy, Dobbins is the best back on Baltimore's roster. Look no further than his rookie campaign, where he rushed for 805 yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries in 15 games. Since that standout rookie year, Dobbins has only played eight games, all of which came this past season.
While his 520 rushing yards and two touchdowns won't jump off the page as No. 1 running back material, his 5.7 yards per carry shows how effective he was in those eight games.
The Ravens hope that in addition to the rehab of backs, the change in the scheme under Todd Monken can help lessen the risk of wear and tear on their running backs.
