Ex Ravens OL Orlando Brown Jr. Rips Greg Roman: Lamar Jackson 'Hindered In The System'
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about how the Baltimore Ravens will look when they take the field for the first time this fall. Not only did they lock quarterback Lamar Jackson in on a new contract, but the hire of offensive coordinator Todd Monken has fans and analysts alike buzzing with excitement.
However, they aren't the only ones intrigued to see what a Monken offense will look like in Baltimore.
Former Ravens offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr., who signed with the Cincinnati Bengals this offseason, had some ... choice words for former Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman and his impact on Jackson in an appearance on ESPN's NFL Live.
“It’s kind of unspoken about because he was hindered in the system he was in,” Brown said. “He has an incredible feel for the pass game. And you look at his numbers and what he’s able to do, especially in between the numbers. On this level in tight windows, it’s very very difficult.”
A common critique of Jackson has been his prowess, or lack thereof, in the passing game. One look at his stats, though, and it becomes clear that those criticisms are unbased.
Jackson appeared in just 12 games last season, but still threw for 2,242 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 62.3 percent of his passes. Go back to his MVP-winning season in 2019 and those numbers are even better - 3,127 yards with 36 touchdowns and six touchdowns, completing 66.1 percent of his passes.
Now, with Roman out and Monken in, Brown believes that there is plenty of potential for the 2023 Ravens offense to be special if everything comes together.
“I think the sky's the limit for what their offense can be,” Brown said. “I’ll be interested to see how they put it together (and) how everything will work but I do feel like it will be positive in the run game just with the way that things will be spread out.”
Roman was a hot topic during his tenure in Baltimore, receiving his fair share of grief for how the offense was conducted. Now, the Ravens get the opportunity to see how Jackson and the rest of the offense fares with Monken calling the shots.
