Is Ravens’ One-Year Deal with Odell Beckham Jr. Best in NFL?
There was a lot of time spent speculating where star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. would end up before he landed with the Baltimore Ravens.
Just about any team that had a glimmer of hope to compete for a Super Bowl was mentioned as a potential landing spot, and that of course included the Ravens who are almost always in the running as a team making a push toward the top of the league.
The problem is that while Baltimore has been competitive, they haven’t been able to get to the big game under quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Something they’re hoping will change with the arrival of NFL.com’s second-best one-year deal signed this offseason.
“After sitting out all last season, the jury remains out on how much juice is left in Beckham’s tank,” says NFL.com. “But his mere presence in Baltimore should help open the offense.”
Beckham isn’t the only new weapon Jackson got to go along with his shiny new contract.
Joining the veteran receiver is rookie Zay Flowers who will look to combine with 2021 first round NFL Draft pick Rashod Bateman and veteran tight end Mark Andrews to give Jackson plenty of options in the passing game.
And that’s in addition to running backs like Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins - once his hold-in is resolved.
The questions around Beckham are not only about how long it’s been since we saw him on a football field for a game, but the reason why we haven’t.
Beckham last played a meaningful game in February of 2022 in the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
In that game, the star receiver had two catches, 54 yards and one touchdown and was on his way to being the game’s MVP before suffering a torn ACL that cost him all of the 2022 season.
Turning 31 years old in November this season represents his first back on the field since suffering the injury. History says that year is pretty rough for players trying to come back from injuries like the one he suffered.
Baltimore went ahead and took a chance on getting good play out of the veteran anyway and NFL.com clearly thinks it was the right move to make.
If they’re both right then the Ravens new offense under coordinator Todd Monken will have more weapons than Jackson has ever had at his disposal, and it might just be enough to become the newest threat to the Kansas City Chiefs’ hold on the AFC.
