Ravens Take Another Look at OC Candidates Todd Monken, Dave Canales

The Ravens are considering numerous candidates for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
In this story:

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Ravens coach John Harbaugh looks to be narrowing the list of candidates for their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken recently earned his second interview with the team, according to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo

Monken helped guide the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships. Georgia averaged 501.1 yards and 40.7 points per game during last season's remarkable run.

Monken has also coached in the NFL, serving as the offensive coordinator for Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2016 to 2018 and the offensive coordinator for the Ravens' AFC North rival, Cleveland Browns, in 2019.

Monken, 56, could become the second consecutive coach hired from the college level to be a coordinator in Baltimore.

Prior to last season, Harbaugh hired Michigan defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald for the same job. After a slow start, the Ravens finished No. 3 in points allowed and No. 9 in yards allowed.

Monken has the potential to make the same impact on the other side of the ball.

However, Monken is not the only candidate to earn a second look.

Harbaugh also brought back Seattle Seahawks quarterback coach Dave Canales for a second interview. Canales, 41, played a crucial role in revitalizing the career of quarterback Geno Smith in Seattle.

Smith earned his trip to the Pro Bowl after spending his first seven seasons in the NFL primarily as a backup. Smith threw for 4,282 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a 100.9 quarterback rating.

Could he have the same impact on Lamar Jackson?

It's certainly worth consideration.

Justin Outten, who was the Denver Broncos' offensive coordinator last season, also was slated to get a second look in Baltimore, according to Garafolo. Outen, 39, has several years of NFL experience and spent three years as the Packers' tight ends coach (2019-2021) and also worked with the Atlanta Falcons.

Outten, however, doesn't have the pedigree of the other candidates.

The Ravens are also reportedly talking to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, Cowboys quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier, and Bills wide receivers coach Chad Hall about the job.

The wild card candidate remains Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who has taken the Chiefs' offense to another level with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. However, there is stern competition for Bieniemy's services and is a candidate to become the new head coach of the Colts.

If Bieniemy does decide to come to Baltimore, the hope is he could have a major impact on Jackson and turn him into a postseason wonder like Mahomes.

Baltimore parted ways with Greg Roman following the 2022-23 season. Roman developed one of the most dangerous running attacks in the NFL, but he could never get the passing game to the next level.
