Welcome Back: Ravens Re-Sign QB Josh Johnson for Third Stint With Team
While having a franchise caliber quarterback is paramount to a team being successful in the NFL, the importance of having a reliable backup quarterback cannot be understated.
The perfect example from last season was the San Francisco 49ers, who saw their starter in Jimmy Garoppolo go down with a season-ending injury. Instead of fading down the stretch, rookie Brock Purdy stepped in and led them to the playoffs.
For the Baltimore Ravens, they also saw the importance of having a dependable backup in 2022. Tyler Huntley started four games for the Ravens in place of Lamar Jackson, going 2-2 in the process.
Not only did they already bring back Huntley this offseason, but they also announced on Wednesday that they would be re-signing former Baltimore quarterback Josh Johnson.
Johnson has played for an NFL record 14 teams, and this is his third stint with the Ravens. He previously played for Baltimore in 2016 and 2021, which was the last time he started a game - completing 28-of-40 passes for 304 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
He also spent time with the aforementioned 49ers last season, seeing action in the NFC Championship against the Philadelphia Eagles after Purdy was injured. However, he too had to exit early, leaving the game in the third quarter with a concussion.
Ultimately, the Ravens will hope that Johnson doesn't have to see the field in extended action as a starter. If he does, though, he's proven he can be a consistent backup that will give them solid depth in the quarterback room.
