Ravens' Todd Monken Critical to Baltimore: 'Much-Needed Spark'

Todd Monken hopes to add life to the Baltimore Ravens offense this season.
In this story:

The Baltimore Ravens are in need to win now more than ever.

With Lamar Jackson finally paid and approaching his prime, each year proves to me that much more important for the Ravens' Super Bowl hopes.

Another key cog in the machine is Todd Monken, who replaces Greg Roman as the team's offensive coordinator.

"In his first year as the Ravens' new playcaller, Monken is in charge of getting Lamar Jackson and this once-dominant offense back on track," ESPN's Jamison Hensley writes. "Since 2019, Baltimore is 27-5 (.844) when scoring more than 25 points. But the Ravens have been held to 20 points or less in 13 of their past 26 games, which is a problem. Monken is giving the Baltimore offense a different look -- more passing and more audibles -- in an attempt to provide a much-needed spark."

Monken is expected to be less reliant on the run and more keen on getting the ball downfield through the air, something Baltimore has struggled with in the past. However, with free agent signee Odell Beckham Jr. and first-round pick Zay Flowers added to Jackson's weaponry, there's more opportunity for bigger plays through the air.

If Monken can revive Baltimore's offense and Jackson can respond well to the changes while staying healthy, the Ravens will likely return the playoffs and possibly make a deeper run in 2023.
