Eagles Cut Darius Slay; Should Seahawks Sign, Grant Quandre Diggs' Wish?
Seattle Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs might soon be retiring from his short-lived career as a recruiter for the team and front office.
But before he calls it quits as a recruiter, he needs to see the Seahawks make a few more moves with the start of free agency beginning on Wednesday.
"Now let’s make a couple more moves and then I’m straight off this recruiting junk!" Diggs tweeted Tuesday.
It's fitting timing, as Philadelphia Eagles star cornerback and prime Diggs recruiting target Darius Slay announced Wednesday morning that he'll be moving on from the team, with reports from multiple sources stating that the two sides not agreeing on a restructured contract led to his release.
The Eagles gave the five-time Pro Bowl cornerback permission to request a trade ahead of his release.
Diggs quickly jumped back into Twitter mode, saying "Let's go" and tagging the Seahawks Twitter account after the news broke.
But the Seahawks could have to hope that Diggs' efforts will pay off if they do indeed pursue Slay, as they could have some steep competition from other teams interested in signing him.
It certainly helps that, per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Eagles will designate a post-June 1 release "which would push over $13 million of his cap hit into 2024" and make him count a little over $8 million for the 2023 cap.
The smaller cap hit for next season makes Slay even more enticing for the Seahawks, though there's countless other reasons that aren't financial. Along with being a play-making All-Pro cornerback, he and Diggs also go way back.
He and Diggs played four-and-a-half seasons together with the Detroit Lions and clearly built a strong relationship, as Diggs recruited his "best friend" to Seattle.
"Well Well Well what do we have here!" Diggs tweeted. "Mr. Slay @bigplay24slay your best friend is over here in Seattle loving life I think you will too brother! You already know my people so it shouldn’t be hard to have the convo!"
Should the Seahawks and the Eagles agree to a deal involving the one-time All-Pro, Seattle would be adding an elite corner to a budding secondary.
Slay, who finished with a league-leading eight interceptions and 26 passes defended with the Lions in 2017, has continued to live up to his "Big Play Slay" nickname since then. He led the league in interception return yards (116) and pick-sixes (two) in 2021 before adding three more picks to his career total this past season.
Diggs even made sure his Seahawks timeline got a reminder of what Slay is capable of, sharing a highlight reel from Week 2 of this past season, a performance that saw the Eagles star total two interceptions and five passes defended in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.
The Seahawks will have to make some aggressive moves if they want Slay, though it could be worth it to add one of the league's best corners to a secondary that already features Diggs, Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant while potentially getting Jamal Adams back.
Time will tell if Diggs' wishes come true.
